I support President Obama's proposed repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the President's proposal to grant all the federal rights of marriage to same-sex couples in "legally-recognized unions." It does not matter if those unions are marriage, civil unions, domestic partnerships or any other union recognized by a state.  At present, this would cover 14 states. Congressman Nadler is introducing a bill which only grants benefits to married same-sex couples which would only cover only 4 New England states plus Iowa.  This ignores the entire western United States as California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada & Wisconsin have domestic partnerships and Colorado & Hawaii have other forms of recognition. President Obama's more inclusive plan would be available to ten of millions more.  Most LGBT people cannot afford to travel to New England to get married.  Therefore, I urge you to join the President in supporting equal federal marriage rights for same-sex couples in "legally-recognized unions" and make sure Congressman Nadler's bill is amended to be more inclusive.

President Obama wants Congress to repeal DOMA and enact legislation giving federal marital rights to any legally-recognized union (a term his campaign came up with and appeared on the White House web site). This means that anyone in the 14 states & Washington, D.C. that have same-sex marriages, civil unions or domestic partnerships could have full federal marital rights (joint income tax, social security benefits, immigration rights & 1,135 more!). This also means that if you live in any of the other 36 states you could travel to Massachusetts and get married or to New Jersey to get a civil union or to California, Washington or Oregon and sign up as registered domestic partners and have all the federal rights of marriage even if your home state does not grant you state marital rights. Imagine, federal marriage rights in all 50 states! That would be a great accomplishment! (Dare I say, "Change we can believe in!"?)

To contact President Obama and thank him for his support in repealing DOMA and supporting federal marriage equality you can email him.

If you are so inclined, you can also e-mail our national LGBT organizations and urge them to be more active and more vocal in obtaining our federal rights of marriage.
